Oprah Winfrey, Joel Osteen, the Prosperity Gospel, and even Donald Trump; they all have one thing in common: New Thought. New Thought is the belief that you can manifest what you want through thinking good thoughts and that God is within. The ideas of sin and hell are distractions. New Thought, a mental healing cult closely related to Christian Science, first emerged in the 1870s and was later promoted by philosophers like Norman Vincent Peale. Its leaders promised that thought could shape reality and that if one meditated upon a goal, that goal—be it health, spiritual enlightenment, or wealth—would be reached. This leads to the doctrine of Universalism. There is no hell, and all people, regardless of belief in Christ, will go to Heaven. Tonight we will take a deep dive into this cultish philosophy that has crept into every aspect of our modern lives.
