What is the Catholic View of Israel & Zionism?

Modern evangelicalism seems to dominate headlines and current public policy; however, the Catholic view of Israel and Zionism is quite different. Catholics view the Church not as the replacement of the ethnic Jewish people but as the continuation of Israel. While the Catholic Church recognizes Israel as a governmental state, Catholic teaching rejects a theological basis for Zionism. It does not teach that the modern State of Israel fulfills biblical prophecies about the “restoration of Israel” in a way that requires or implies a separate divine plan apart from Christ and the Church. Nor does it support “Christian Zionism,”, which often interprets current events in Israel through dispensationalist end-times scenarios, and sees the modern state as the biblical Israel. We will dive into these deep theological ideas and try to make sense of our current volatile political and religious climate.
