Sophia Polny: From The Killing Fields of Cambodia To The Harvest Fields of Christ
Many of you already know Sophia from her work with her husband Bo Polny of Gold2020Forecast.com and his Youtube channel Gold 2020 Forecast. But what you might not know is her powerful testimony of life in the Killing Fields of Cambodia in the 1970’s under the brutal communist regime, the Khmer Rouge, led by mad man: Pol Pot, and backed by the Chinese Communist Party and mass genocidal maniac, chairman Mao Zedong. Her story of heartache, redemption, hope and triumph will leave you filled to the brim with the power and LOVE of God!
When Sophia was just a little girl of 4 years old in Cambodia, she tells us, that one day everything went black- and they took everything away, teddy bears, sunglasses, you name it. They separated families, children and genders; Sophia didn’t even think that she had a family anymore. She remembers thinking, “I’d better listen or they are going to hurt me.” Life in the communist camps during the Cambodian Genocide was extremely harsh, they shaved their heads for lice, ate a bland diet of watery rice and worked hard in the rice fields all day. Two of Sophia’s little sisters tragically died of malnutrition- while they tried to kill her father by torturing him and attempting to suffocate him with a bag over his head- sadly this was a common cause of death of so many Cambodians. All of this because he tried to get some sugar cane to try to get nourishment into his children. Thankfully, her father survived, but with the loss of sight in one eye.
Sophia endured this life of them “taking all of your rights away,” for three years before God rescued her family and they were able to flee to a Christian community and church in Iowa. She says that she learned to love through the actions of the caring people there. Today, Sophia has allowed that love to transform her:
Jesus healed me from all my brokenness, all my pain, all my persecution and all of my torture.
The tragedy that Sophia Polny endured in her earliest years of life could have crippled her; instead she says, “It’s all about empowering who you are.” And that is exactly what she tries to do with every person that she meets.
I’m so thankful to be able to have a voice and be a voice for those who don’t have a voice.
One of the most powerful moments of our conversation with Sophia was when she told us that “sometimes it’s not about where you grow up, it’s about the choices you make.” Sophia chose the Lord…
Life is funny, it’s about a storm that’s IN a boat, but what you do in the boat is up to you… He’s in that boat with us, regardless of how shaky it is.
Wow, that hits hard- it doesn’t matter if you lived in plush American suburbia or the Killing Fields of Cambodia in the 70’s, we each have choices to make. Sophia’s choice is to show others the love of God and harvest souls in Christ’s field. Her message to you is this:
“You don’t have to be a special “someone” to know you’re special… You just open the Bible and find out what it says about you.”
Isaiah 43 is one of those places to find out what God says about you.
“He who formed you says…
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you [from captivity];
I have called you by name; you are Mine!
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
And through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you.
When you walk through fire, you will not be scorched,
Nor will the flame burn you….
Because you are precious in My sight,
You are honored and I love you.”
During this entire interview I felt so empowered by Sophia’s words not to give up or back down, but to know who I am in Christ. “Remember your authority to do what is right, FIGHT for what is RIGHT– If you don’t understand and apply your authority, you’re always going to be in that shaking boat!” I can’t seem to get so many of her words out of my head, especially about sacrifice. Here she has gone through so much in this life and yet still, she is daily willing to sacrifice it all for Christ. She says
“There’s going to be sacrifice, but are you willing to sacrifice? Because He sacrificed EVERYTHING!”
Lastly she left us with a whirlwind of might and inspiration, “Wisdom will strengthen you- wisdom and courage… and at the end of the day, it all comes down to your character… God gave us power, we ARE the Power… Love will clear up & HEAL everything.”
